Where Does Your PDF Go? How PDFerret Differs from Typical Online PDF Tools

You want to merge two PDFs. You open an online tool, drop your file, click a button. Simple. But have you ever stopped to think about where that file goes in between?

For most online PDF tools, the answer is: to a server you do not control. That is how cloud tools work. Your file travels from your device to a data center, gets processed there, and travels back. Privacy policies will tell you how long files are kept before deletion. Some tools promise a few hours. Some say longer. You are, in the end, choosing to trust a promise.

PDFerret works differently. Every tool runs inside your browser. When you merge, split, rotate, sign or compress a PDF here, the file never leaves your device. There is no upload step because there is no server doing the work.

How to verify this yourself

Open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and process a file on any PDF tool site. On a cloud tool you will see your file being sent to a remote address. On PDFerret you will see no file upload at all. This check works on every tool site you ever visit, not just ours. A privacy claim you cannot verify is just marketing.

Where cloud tools are still better

Honesty matters more to us than a sales pitch. Cloud services process files on powerful machines, so they can offer things we deliberately do not: converting PDFs to editable Word or Excel files, high-accuracy server-side OCR, and cross-device file storage. If you need those, a cloud tool is the right choice. Also, PDFerret's merge does not carry over bookmarks and internal links, and we say so on the tool page.

A note on limits

Many cloud tools gate how much you can do for free, or how big your file can be, because server time costs money. Our tools run on your device, so there is no per-task cost to us, and we set no task limits. The only real limit is your browser's memory, and we would rather tell you that than pretend it does not exist.

How to judge any PDF tool site in ten seconds

Open the Network tab before you drop your file. If you see an upload request carrying your file, your document is on someone else's machine now, whatever the front page says. If you do not, it is not. That single habit tells you more than any privacy badge.

If your PDFs are routine paperwork, any tool will do. If your PDFs are yours, the choice of architecture is the choice about who gets to hold them, even briefly.
